The architecture

Farmer James Swail made history when he settled in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood in 1860.

As recently as 1882, the Montreal Hunt Club was established in the area. It was a place where wealthy people gathered to hunt foxes and small game. On these secluded stretches of land, where nature was unspoiled and unspoiled, club members enjoyed the natural bounty of their surroundings. This exclusive club offered the opportunity to indulge in the pleasures of high society at a time when large parts of Montreal had not yet been developed.

At the time of its construction, the magnificent wood and brick castle perched atop the Côte-des-Neiges plateau offered a spectacular view of the north as far as the Laurentians. Today, this view can still be enjoyed from the soccer field of Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf.

Today in Côte-des-Neiges, we find diversity in its population, but also in its buildings and architecture. Just take a few steps and you’ll be amazed at the variety of architectural styles: Georgian, Tudor, Beaux-Arts, Italian Renaissance, Brutalist, Modernist, Rural and French Canadian.

The higher elevations feature elegant homes, while the lower lots offer more affordable options that attract students and new residents. Classic two-storey semi-detached homes and buildings built from 1900 to the present-day blend seamlessly, creating a colourful landscape that appeals to all visitors.
